When Caroline first reached out, she mentioned that her absolute favorite photos were taken in Paris, that timeless, romantic, European look really spoke to her, and she asked if we could capture an Old English aesthetic for her portraits. I immediately offered Joslyn Castle as the spot, and it turned out to be the ultimate match.

Stepping onto the castle grounds with Caroline was exactly the creative reset I needed. Between the grand Scottish Baronial stone architecture, lush courtyard greens, and fairytale textures, the entire afternoon made my heart so happy. It truly felt less like a standard local shoot and more like stepping straight onto a historic European estate.

As we were walking through the gardens, Caroline mentioned that her all-time favorite Disney princess is Cinderella. I had to laugh because that was the exact vibe I had guessed for her before she even told me! With her cascading blonde curls, the romantic stone archways, and the sweeping skirts, she looked like modern-day royalty effortlessly fitting the space.
1. Everything You Need in One Spot
We started at 6:30 PM and spent about three hours exploring the castle grounds and secret gardens. Because the property is so expansive and varied, we didn’t need to waste time driving around Omaha to hit multiple locations. Instead, Caroline simply swapped outfits whenever we wanted to transition to a new visual mood.
She nailed the styling by mixing accessible pieces with standout boutique finds: one of her favorite dresses came straight from Target, while her other look was sourced from Madida Clothing.

Reserving the grounds was completely seamless. The photog permit/rental fee was $100, which is exceptionally reasonable for the quality, scale, and background variety you get. It was worth every single penny to have access to such a versatile historic setting.

If you’ve ever tried finding parking near central Omaha during peak hours, you know the headache. Fortunately, Joslyn Castle has its own dedicated parking area right on the grounds, so you don’t have to worry about parallel parking or hunting down street meters while carrying outfit options.
Realistic Tips for Shooting at Joslyn Castle
While the location is top-tier, a few practical realities are worth keeping in mind to make sure your shoot runs smoothly:
Account for Construction Delays: Omaha currently has a heavy amount of road construction. Give yourself plenty of buffer time on the drive over so you aren’t rushing before your start time.
Navigating Other Visitors: As with any popular historic landmark, you may run into rule-breakers or other visitors wandering through the gardens. Luckily, we didn’t have to fight for space or compete with huge crowds to execute our shot list, but staying patient and flexible is key.
Embrace the Lighting: With our 6:30 PM start time leading up to an 8:30 PM sunset, we had soft, overcast cloud cover the whole time. Overcast light acts as a giant natural softbox—it gave us a stunning, warm variety of tones across the stone walls and flower gardens, which is my personal favorite lighting condition for this editorial style.
